Join the Club
First-timers to black belts — everyone starts the same way. Here's the whole path.
Step 1: Get on the roster
Fill out our registration form first — it puts you on the roster sheet and helps us track memberships, contact info, and rashguard sizes. Takes about two minutes.
Why join?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art that uses leverage and technique to control and submit an opponent — which is why it works regardless of your size or strength. It's also one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Here's what you get out of it:
- Self-defense: most real altercations end up on the ground, and BJJ is built for exactly that. Live sparring ("rolling") builds real muscle memory.
- Fitness: BJJ hits every major muscle group and doubles as serious cardio — expect better strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance.
- Mental health: training is a proven stress-reliever, and watching yourself improve week over week does wonders for confidence.
- Community: above all, the CSUN club is a welcoming crew that gives you something to look forward to after a long day of studying.

Required registration steps
To attend tryouts or practice
- Log in to Risk-X with your CSUN credentials and complete the required forms: Waiver, Emergency Contact Card, Code of Conduct (Sports Clubs and California), Academic Release, and PREP (done once per college career).
- Forms update in real time — you can even fill them out at the door of practice and still be cleared to participate.
To become a fully rostered member
- Medical paperwork: new participant forms or returning participant forms. Print, fill out in blue or black pen, and turn it in yourself at the Athletic Training Clinic (you can't turn in paperwork for another student).
- Baseline concussion test: walk-in at the Athletic Training Clinic, about 30–40 minutes. Medical paperwork must be turned in first.
- Physical / EKG: scheduled at the Klotz Student Health Center after your medical paperwork is in.
- Sports Clubs 101: required once per college career. The Fall 2026 session date hasn't been announced yet. BUT we'll post it here and on Instagram.
Questions about any step? Email jiujitsu@csunas.org or DM @csunbjjofficial , we'll be happy to walk you through it.
Common questions
"I've never done martial arts. Can I still join?"
Yes, of course! We welcome any and all skill levels! First-timers to black belts.
"Do I need to buy a gi (kimono)?"
Nope! We're strictly a no-gi program, so no purchase is necessary — and every membership comes with a club set (rashguard + shorts).
"I'm new to the sport. Can I do the competition class?"
We don't stop beginners from training with competitors, but keep in mind the competition class is faster-paced and a bit more advanced. The fundamentals classes are the best place to start.
